When it comes to Victorian values you can't beat The Albert. Richly accoutred, nobly disposed, it is the very model of a high Victorian public house. Today, gleaming new towers attempt to dwarf The Albert. It remains steadfastly undwarfed. With its fine engraved windows, removed and stored during the war, its rich decorations, its gleaming bar and noble staircase, it is in splendid form. It needs a staff of 28 to keep it running smoothly, more in the summer.
There is quick food in the bar and a busy carvery on the first floor, and tourists with much to see in the neighbourhood find here a welcome respite from sore feet and history. The three-course meal runs in at £14.95 including service and the wine list boasts a gentle, reasonably priced selection of bottles. This is New Scotland Yard's local and MPs use it a lot.
